Saying “thank you very much” would be simple for me, but “the tough thing for me is to work hard for another 9 months and come back and play at least 1 more season of IPL” is what would be easy. This is how CSK skipper MS Dhoni famously expressed his gratitude after his team won the IPL trophy for the fifth time in 2023. The fans had expected the mercurial skipper to go with a trophy cabinet as large as Chennai itself, so it seemed all but assured, but Dhoni decided to play one more season.
And now it’s here—the Chennai Super Kings’ “one more season” led by MS Dhoni on the pitch. The five-time winners had a well-assembled team going into the IPL 2024 Auction, with only a few gaps to be filled. Prior to the IPL 2024 season, Ambati Rayudu decided to hang up his boots, hence the Chennai franchise sought to find a replacement. Along with some bolstering in the bowling department, CSK also required some youthful, hard-hitting players who could step in when necessary.
The Chennai team began the auction in their customary carefree manner, attempting to bid on World Cup winner Travis Head but ultimately declining him in light of SRH’s pursuit. With the support of the Chennai think tank, Rachin Ravindra was able to get a deal to become their first player for Rs 1.8 crore. The young batsman from New Zealand adds confidence to the upper order with both his pace and his excellent technique against spin.
Former CSK player Shardul Thakur was the next player selected by CSK in the IPL 2024 auction, having been bought in for INR 4 crore. Though at a high economy rate, the right-arm fast bowler adds a wealth of expertise to the game. But Thakur can also contribute with the bat, which makes him a valuable option for a lower-order batter.
The five-time winners then turned their attention to Daryle Mitchell, a Kiwi all-around player, and spent a lot of money on him. At the IPL Auction 2024, the left-hand batter became CSK’s most expensive acquisition at INR 14 Crore.
‘Right-handed Suresh Raina’, or Sameer Rizvi, was maybe the most exciting player that CSK ever bought. Following an incredible performance in the UPT20 League, Rizvi gained media attention. Rizvi amassed 455 runs in 10 games at an outstanding average of 50 and a strike rate of 188.8.
To bolster their bowling, CSK paid INR 2 crores for the services of Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman during the expedited round. Avinash Rao Aravelly, a youthful batter, was purchased by the Chennai franchise for INR 20 lakh to round out the IPL 2024 auction.
